Surely, we remember the Coal mines, Car plants, Shipyards, Steel works,shutting down?
Look now, at our towns. the main street full of pie shops and taverns
and bouncers getting bigger and more villainous as the sun sets on our world. Bingeing brawlers bashing anyone in sight.
Rome was invaded by the Gothic hordes of vandals but we appear to have merely grown our own.
What lunatic set of bureaucrats; fresh from their hols in sunny climes, could even contemplate that cafe culture would not take root in our northern cities where butting and clobbering were the tools of the tirade.
The hot tempered denizens of mediterranean regions might prefer to sleep and eat but our homegrown yobbery is a different kettle of fish, with the sole ambition to become insensibly legless.
Is this a silent scream of abject despair? The too grim Reality of todays world maybe? To hide in an empty cloud of alcohol?
What of the Shopperholic shopping just to buy more. I have seen houses where there is no room left to live. Most of the clothes and consumer goods still in their wrapping.Wanton Despair!
When the Saudi oil field starts to really dry up and the fatalistic mobs throw sand into the works of the Mighty Western armies of the Last Empire. The world will grind to a stop.
What then?
Will all the herbs on the windowsill and the "Transition Town" sock darning committees manage to encourage the boozeless, bareshelved alcoholic shoppers to live the simple life. I don't think so!
The World we live in is doomed. Katrinastyle extinction. Remember those poor souls sitting in the road for a week waiting for the authorities to come and feed them.
Only the Entrepreneurial piracy of the thieves broke the subdued silence. But they didn't just rob food but all the "glories of civilisation" were burgled too. When their stolen grub was gone and
there was no more to pinch, they waved their automatics and jumped the food queue, I expect.
Alone, a lone wolf will at least attempt look for a solution, but a group of sheep will all look at each other for inspiration - and starve!
Politicians are elected to organise the community. Not to seek for riches. Without leadership, vision and organisation this civilisation will melt away.
We are now at a crucial point in our history. Luckily there are people, still alive who can remember the life we led before the multiplex superstore, the car and phone.
It is essential to find out from these survivors of a former time, just how did they live ... in the olden days - as now we too, will have to plough their furrow, into our different future.
We have to reenter the more sustainable past without carrying with us all the tools that sustain this Unsustainable Wornout Discredited Overdeveloped Civilisation.
We need a new one!
We dont need electric light when we go to sleep.
Surely the street lights should come on when they detect someone passing by?
If the Russians sleep on their huge brick stoves
Why cannot we?
If the Nations of the Frozen North live in insulated houses
Why cannot we?
If the Israelis developed the Kibbutz
Why cannot we?
We HAVE to change our life - we must be sustainably selfsufficient
Big Brother and Nanny State has already packed up and gone
We are on our own
