My stove is very small ~ I can never get enough wood as it consumes tons of wood ~ even with the doors closed and the air valve screwed tight shut.
Likewise I use the car to carry our groceries from the Farm I shudder to think of how else to do it for the load is heavy and the buses are none.
So with the weight of food that we consume - how on earth can we live on hedgerow weeds - the wild and free food so loved of Back to Nature-ists.
How long will it take the pair of us to collect the equivalent of a bag of carrots? and will it keep us alive - I think not!
My great-grandfather had a vegetable garden behind the house with a pig and chickens So did all his neighbours Will the town council allow that now?
I dont think so!
Our world has become too complicated - too many restrictions to even contemplate a different way of life.
We are hostages to the clock.
For instance
It only takes a dozen seconds to switch on and boil a kettle to make a cup of tea
When I lived in Africa the kettle of water was put onto a charcoal stove [made from a car wheel rim] and it would take "hours" for it to boil. Somehow there it didn't matter.
Our life has moved away from the simplicity of the past.
and its hard to see a way back- in time to save our skins
