Guerilla Gardening

When the end comes - and we are alone in the world with no help from any where, There is no food to buy any longer ~ it will be time to go foraging for
wild food in our immediate surroundings.

So its Nettle soup for breakfast dinner and supper.

However it struck me that the main reason that wild food is still wild is that it is rather bland and not much of it.

Imagine a nice firm cabbage, a nice sweet carrot or a new potato. compared to cattail and Good King Henry or Chickweed.

That, my friends, is the reason we eat one rather than the other.

So we have the inevitable snag in that this delicious food will be a magnet for all types of ne'er do wells and other riff raff who will delight in parting it from you

The solution is Guerilla Gardening.

So one dark night, when no -one will see you, venture forth into your local wilderness with the following
  • a small spade
  • a bottomless plastic or metal container
  • a bag of damp potting compost
  • vegetable seeds or seedlings of your choice
  • Water container
  • Slug pellets

In an inconspicuous spot dig a hole and bury the container.
Fill it with the compost and plant the seed/seedling in it,Sprinkling a few pellets to keep off the slugs

The idea of the container is to keep the weeds from overwhelming your plants and the compost is to ensure that the earth is of good quality and weedfree

Walking a dog will be helpful to explain your antics "in the bush"

In the long run tree seeds or small plants such as the various berries [ black, rasp, goose] the currants [Red and Black] and the nuts[ hazel beech acorn sweet chestnut]

Wear a Dayglo jacket and plant up the superhighways alongside the inedible gorse and broom [Look professional rather than shifty]

Merely continue where the official plants men have left off. sometime their plants will have out grown the spiral tree protection sleeves so transfer the redundant ones to yours. The lad on the mower will then go round your plantings rather than over them

So when the shops are closed your garden will be there waiting. I feel a picnic coming on. I doubt whether it will be a good idea to take all your lovely food home as the riff raff will be waiting around every corner. So its a cookout.
