Life Line

How life changes!
As the population ages and the numbers of the youth decline, the Internet is now firmly established as a lifeline to the elderly.
We are seeing a transition in the life of the humble poor.
I see Jim and his very large, arthritic wife lumbering across the yard to a taxi.
They are going supermarket shopping. She will ride the electric shopping trolley while Jim loads it up.
They will call a freephone taxi and wait at the entrance.
In expectation of a fat tip the driver will carry all their bags into their kitchen.
My brother, on the other hand, ticks the boxes on the supermarket web site buying a month's supply of food in order to make the delivery charge more worthwhile.
Our local shops too, have realised that they no longer need to pay heat, light, power and rent for premises - just a website allowing their customers to order goods straight from their warehouse.

Likewise their buyer will most likely do the same sourcing his stock from suppliers worldwide.
However, even this is a dying trade, as online manufacturers can also sell their goods directly to the online public, avoiding the need to have a network of wholesalers or a catalogue business.
The Big Sheds too, will vanish from the landscape just as the small shops evaporated from our streets.
Eventually, perhaps, the Logistics Trucks on the motorway will be replaced by horsedrawn waggon trains collecting global manufactures from the Galleons berthed at the ports.
Just tick the box and wait.... for the postman's horse to come down your way.
